“It is recommended to administer CBD in certain circumstances. It is mainly as a dietary supplement to manage certain types of anxiety and for pain management. Research shows that as mammals, we all have cannabinoid receptors “It can be used on many species but not at any dose.”explains Fabienne Bedet, veterinary behaviorist and holder of a diploma in veterinary psychiatry.
Shampoo, essential oil, granules, capsule, stick… CBD products come in different forms for animals. “It works like it does on humans. When the dog has osteoarthritis, for example, you can put a little on the paw and massage. Every veterinarian we meet is interested because it is not aggressive for the liver and there is no addiction, it is a completely natural product.”presents Jean-Marc Servais, director of San who has been selling CBD products for animals for almost two years. “We worked this out with several veterinarians.”
Is your dog abusing cannabis without you knowing? These signs that do not deceive
If cannabidiol products are considered a food supplement, they should not be used without caution on animals. “You have to be a veterinary doctor to prescribe it wisely because if it is used incorrectly, it will not work as it should. Up to 0.2% THC agent is tolerated. There is a big controversy in France which is mixed on this percentage. In Belgium, it’s a little different but we must not lose sight of the fact that there is a small percentage of THC with psychoactive effects.”underlines the veterinary behaviorist.
Like other dietary supplements, CBD products are over-the-counter and do not require a medical prescription. “You must always have had a diagnosis from a doctor. It’s no use if you don’t know why you’re giving it. I don’t know many vets who would give a blank prescription for this kind of substance if the purchase were to be justified. they remain molecules which act on organisms”specifies Dr Fabienne Bedet.
CBD in Belgium is total hypocrisy: in smoking, it’s yes, in herbal tea, it’s no!
It’s all in the dosage
There is no point in giving CBD to Médor or Félix without advice from the veterinarian. In addition, it is important to take the version dedicated to animals. “It’s a question of concentration. The metabolism of animals is different from that of humans. The animal does not metabolize in the same way as us. If you can take aspirin two to three times a day, the same dose will kill a cat because it is toxic to them. On the other hand, he will be able to have aspirin once every 72 hours.”specifies Fabienne Bedet. “Pain management is part of veterinary practice. Veterinarians have been using this food supplement for several years for the comfort of the animal.”
The quantity of CBD and the duration of treatment will depend on the weight of the animal, the concentration of the product, the pathology and the response of the animal. “In case of overdose, it can make you sleep.finishes the veterinarian.
