First baby 2025: a little Fribourgeoise is ahead of a Valaisan

Little Nolan, in the arms of his parents, is finally the first boy to be born in Switzerland on January 1, 2025.

Christelle and Yannick Favre

Who will be the first baby of the year in Switzerland? Every January 1, maternity wards across the country count the first newborns who showed the tip of their nose after midnight. And for 2025, it seems that, for the moment, the winner will be a little girl born at 12:18 a.m. at the Daler hospital in Fribourg. With her 2.8 kg and 45 cm, she is narrowly ahead of a little Valaisan born at 12:26 a.m., who we had previously presented as being the first baby of 2025.

His parents, Aicha and Papa Diop, are happy. Everything went well, according to the mother who entered the maternity ward at 7 p.m., even though the little girl – who does not yet have a name – was due to arrive on January 2. The little one, who already has a big sister, is therefore undoubtedly the first baby of the year in Switzerland. “We didn’t expect it, it’s nice.”

A Valaisan just behind

A few minutes later, it was Nolan, from Massongex (VS), who was born at Rennaz Hospital (VD). His parents, Christelle and Yannick Favre, as well as his brother Nathan, are over the moon. Nolan, 4.8 kg and 54 cm, was expected on December 26, but he took his time to arrive on January 1. “I heard the nurses wishing each other a happy new year while I was pushing,” she says with humor. “This is not the first baby in Switzerland, but the first in Valais and the first boy in the country,” consoles the father.

In 3rd place, we find little Nael Isaías, born at 12:47 a.m. at the cantonal hospital of Münsterlingen, in Thurgau. He beats a Vaudois infant born at the CHUV in Lausanne at 12:49 a.m. for two minutes. The parents did not wish to say more about the baby.

Four babies in one night in Valais!

Elsewhere, in French-speaking Switzerland, the record undoubtedly goes to the maternity ward of the Valais Hospital, which experienced an eventful night. In fact, no less than four babies – three boys and a girl – were born between 1 a.m. and 6:30 a.m.! The first to show his face was little Robin, from Orsières, at 1:34.

In Geneva, the first baby of the year is little Matéo, born at 1:57 a.m., announced the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG). The day before, Anna was the last to come into the world. Note that the HUG recorded 4,103 births in 2024, compared to 3,922 in 2023.

Near Morges, a little boy was born at 2:44 a.m. But no birth took place at the Pourtalès hospital in Neuchâtel, at the Jura hospital in Delémont, at the cantonal hospital in Friborg or even in Yverdon (VD).

Finally, know that a Zurich baby was born at 12:57 a.m. at Triemli hospital in Zurich. Funny detail: five years ago, his brother was also born in this establishment during the night of December 31, but he, just before midnight.
