At the start of 2025, exceptional measures were put in place to address the tense emergency situation in the Morbihan department, leading to the triggering of “white plans” in the hospitals of Vannes and Ploërmel.

During a white plan, the hospital can “mobilize all of the human, logistical and medical capacities of the establishment, while adapting the continuity and quality of care”according to the Ministry of Health. First, a crisis unit is set up. Then, in concrete terms, it is possible to recall staff during leave or rest time, to open new beds to accommodate more patients, while ensuring continuity of care for other patients. Operations or care can be rescheduled, as can patients be transferred to services that are less under pressure.

The Alphonse Guérin hospital in Ploërmel has been facing strong tensions for several days which are impacting emergency departments and critical care beds (continuous monitoring and intensive care units).

In Vannes, the Brocéliande Atlantique hospital center is also affected by the triggering of the white plan. Thursday January 2, 2025, more than 200 visits to the Vannes emergency room were recorded.

“The difficulties in coping with the large flow of patients and care needs are aggravated by a large number of elderly people and by ongoing epidemics of influenza and other respiratory viruses”indicates the Brocéliande Atlantique Hospital Center in a press release.

For its part, the Regional Health Agency, in a press release dated January 3, 2025, reminds the population that they are invited to “call your doctor as a priority during the day or seek a medical appointment via teleconsultation. In the event of a vital emergency or in doubt about the seriousness of the situation, you must call 15 (or 114 for deaf or hard of hearing people ) before going to the emergency room. The prior call to 15 allows you to have an immediate first medical response and, if necessary, to be properly oriented regarding your health situation: benefit from medical advice over the telephone, be referred to a doctor on call, be directed to the emergency room of the hospital or clinic, or even benefit from the dispatch of a medical team to the site.
