The conclusions were already the same in 2021, during a previous survey. Overall, the Bernese population feels safe on the streets of the canton and is satisfied with its law enforcement. Among the figures emerging from the new survey carried out in 2024, note for example that of the 4,585 people who answered the police’s questions, 88% say they trust the police and 83% feel safe, during the day, in public transport. However, small disparities appear between regions. As in 2021, it is once again in the Bernese Jura that we feel the least safe.
Day or night
Participants from the region notably gave the lowest values regarding the feeling of safety felt during the day, whether on foot, by bike, on public transport or even in their residential neighborhoods. At night, the results are generally similar.
More presence
While it cannot currently provide precise explanations for the slightly worse figures in the Bernese Jura, the cantonal police emphasize that the majority of citizens in the region interviewed still display a high feeling of security.
President of the association of Bernese Jura municipalities. Bienne, the mayor of Perrefitte Virginie Heyer does not perceive any particular problem in terms of security in the region. However, she indicates that a greater presence of law enforcement in the streets of municipalities could be welcome. “This subject was recently discussed as part of a meeting between the police and the Intercommunal Council of Grand Val,” she notes. “The police presence is still less marked in our small communities than in larger centers On the one hand, this may reflect the fact that we do not have any particular security concerns, which is a good sign. But on the other hand, this lack of visibility can perhaps partly explain this feeling of a little less security. strong in the Bernese Jura.”
On the police side, it is indicated that measures are being considered to try to further improve the situation. The police are banking in particular on a greater presence of uniformed agents in sensitive areas of the cantonal territory. An emphasis will also be placed in 2025 on the recruitment of additional police officers. “In the Bernese Jura in particular, we are making efforts to reach out to the population during various events and the police are aware of this,” underlines Joël Regli, communications project manager within the police.
Strategy to be reviewed for the mobile police station
The latter also recalls that a mobile police pilot project had been set up in 2022 in the Bernese Jura, in order to gain proximity to the population. For several months, a bus converted into a small office and driven by two agents had crisscrossed the region to receive the population. “The feedback was positive, but the use of the post was not very high,” notes Joël Regli. “Reflections are underway to continue using the mobile police station in the Bernese Jura, but in another form, for example during various demonstrations or events,” he said.
