In a message published on Facebook, the mayor of La Roque-Gageac explains that “the cold, the frost, the humidity, the absence of candles or an electrical system unfortunately make us think of a voluntary act”.

The Christmas nativity scene in La Roque-Gageac (Dordogne) went up in smoke on the night of Friday December 27 to Saturday December 28, reports Bleu. “The cold, the frost, the humidity, the absence of a candle or an electrical system unfortunately make us think of a voluntary act which would have had more serious consequences on the framework of the hall and the surrounding chalets”wrote on the social networks of this village of 430 inhabitants, mayor Jérôme Peyrat, former advisor to Emmanuel Macron.

This crèche installed under the hall, continues the councilor sentenced in 2020 to a 3,000 euro suspended fine for violence against his ex-partner by the Angoulême criminal court, had been designed by “a local artist and craftsman” and put together by volunteers.

A new work put in place

“Secularism very poorly understood? Violence against a Christian symbol? Crass stupidity? A little of all this? Whatever the real question, it will find the same answer”asks Jérôme Peyrat who announces he is filing a complaint.

A new work will be put in place. “We will not be intimidated and will retain our traditions and values”concludes the mayor.
