The most burglarized city in in 2022, in proportion to the number of inhabitants, (Haute-Garonne) has seen its number of crimes decrease drastically. The town hall assures that the figures have returned to a normal level.

In 2022, the town of Tournefeuille was declared as the most burglarized town in France, in proportion to the number of inhabitants. Over the year, she would have experienced the equivalent of one burglary per day according to the town hall. Two years later, the town claims to have returned to more normal figures, reported France Blue.

“Today, there are no more burglaries in Tournefeuille than elsewhere”estimated Élisabeth Husson-Barnier, the socialist deputy mayor in charge of public peace. According to her, the increase in the number of burglaries can be explained by several points: “The city is very residential. And we were coming out of Covid, people stayed at home a lot. And it picked up again after this period”. Burglaries decreased by 44% in 2023 according to her.

Strengthen the surveillance camera system

A new director of public peace was appointed by the city at the end of last year. Djamel Benoumeur has taken care of the police presence and all security measures since 2022. “The idea was to strengthen the links between municipal and national police. Being a police force that covers the city as much as possible allows us to reduce the data”he said. The surveillance camera system has notably been strengthened. The objective, by 2026, “is to mesh the entire municipality and even target the entrances and exits of the city”.

On the opposition side, we are calling for more police officers in the city. “In our city, which is a city of 30,000 inhabitants, we only have eight municipal police officers. To be in the average of cities in France, we would have to have 16”explained Laurent Soulié, Renaissance municipal representative.
