The firefighters of the Vayrac-Bétaille fire and rescue center gathered this Saturday, December 14 in the village hall of Saint-Denis-lès-Martel to celebrate their traditional Sainte-Barbe. Many elected officials were present as well as families and friends of the firefighters.

To open the ceremony, Colonel Olivier Labadie, head of the three territorial fire and rescue units of the Lot, representing the director, read the message from Bruno Retailleau, Minister of the Interior: “On this day of Sainte-Barbe I therefore want to reaffirm, on behalf of the government, our commitment to you. You are the faces of this French solidarity which makes our country strong, and your dedication commands the admiration of all…”.

There was then the presentation of medals of honor to the firefighters: silver level for twenty years of service to chief sergeant Philippe ; bronze level for ten years to Corporal Gilles Tocaben; the presentation of the corporal stripes to Rafael Vilha Vela Morais, and of nurse to Cyril Klein. It should be noted that Didier Laval received the medal of honor at the grand gold level for forty years of service on December 6 in Cahors. Congratulations to all of these recipients.

The assembly then observed a minute of silence in memory of Michel Challon, former head of the CIS, who died fourteen years ago to the day. Then Captain Didier Laval, head of the Vayrac-Bétaille CIS, took stock of 2024: training, two new recruits but three resignations, 351 interventions in nine municipalities (including 117 in Vayrac). He thanked public and private employers who keep their employee-volunteer firefighters available whenever possible.

After the interventions of Lieutenant Pascal Males, representing the president of the departmental union, and Colonel Olivier Labadie, representing the head of Sdis du Lot, the elected officials spoke. Françoise Langlade, deputy mayor of Saint-Denis near Martel, thanked the firefighters for the 17 interventions in her town. Gaëligue Jos, departmental councilor, praised the strength of the voluntary commitment and dedication of the firefighters. Raphaël Daubet, senator, for his part, emphasized the need to protect the model and current status of Civil Security. But he recalled that it was urgent to find a lasting solution for its financing. Both thanked the firefighters and their families.

It was then time for conviviality with a friendly drink offered by the community, then meals and music.
