The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM, Maroc Météo) now benefits from data from the new third generation Meteosat system (MTG), succeeding the second generation Meteosat system (MSG), according to an official announcement from EUMETSAT, the European organization dedicated to meteorological observation by satellite. This cutting-edge device has been fully operational since December 4, 2024.

The MTG system marks a significant advance in the field of satellite imagery and weather forecasting. It offers continuous observation with improved spatio-temporal resolution, allowing images every ten minutes at a resolution of 1 km, compared to fifteen minutes and 3 km for the previous system. This new tool also has 16 observation channels, compared to 12 previously, and integrates an unprecedented capacity for detecting and monitoring lightning in near real time.

These innovations allow the DGM to considerably improve the monitoring and analysis of weather conditions, thus strengthening its capacity to anticipate climate risks in the service of the security and well-being of populations. The Eumetcast Europe broadcast service (Ku-Band) also facilitates optimal access to this high-precision data.

By adopting the MTG system, Morocco is part of a technological boom seeking to optimize the management of meteorological hazards, in a context where extreme climatic events are increasing. The DGM welcomed EUMETSAT’s commitment to making this essential data available, emphasizing the importance of this international cooperation to strengthen adaptation capacities in the face of climate challenges.
