These are two little babies who are joining the family of the zoological and botanical park at the end of 2024.

According to 3, a small ara hacinthe as well as a crested macaque were born in November.

Fewer than 10,000 monkeys and 5,000 macaws in the wild

These two species are threatened with extinction. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the hacinth macaw, recognizable by its blue color, has a “vulnerable” status.

“Among the 332 species of Psittacidae (parrot family) listed to date, almost 90 species are threatened with extinction. This proportion of threatened species is not reached by any other family of birds and attests to its vulnerability, both ecologically and economically: the causes of the disappearance of parrots are the destruction of their habitat combined with a highly developed trade in species. », We can read on the zoo website.

There are fewer than 5,000 left in the wild.

As for crested macaques, the situation is even worse. The IUCN classifies the species as “critically endangered”.

“The species is mainly threatened by poaching: its hunting is a very developed tradition and it is also sometimes captured for the live animal trade. The expansion of illegal gold mines and food crops is gradually eroding the forest, which is becoming a growing threat to the survival of this species, already classified as “critically endangered” by the IUCN: they are in “fewer than 6,000 in their original environment, with 80% of the total population having disappeared in 40 years,” concludes the zoo.
