  • A request for investment credits made by the Department of Public Education worries associations defending disabled people.

  • The State wants to build seven new specialized teaching schools in order to meet the needs and the dilapidation of the premises.

  • Associations accuse this policy of “segregation”. They denounce the vocabulary used to describe schoolchildren with special needs or disabilities.

Schools of anger: Fégaph (Geneva Federation of associations of disabled people and their loved ones) sent an angry communication to the Department of Public Education (DIP) after discovering its plan to build seven new specialized education schools . The fact that these structures will be built on their own sites, that is to say separate from ordinary schools, crystallizes the tensions.

In mid-November, the DIP submitted a request for credits of 42 million francs to the Grand Conseil to build these new establishments in Vernier, Grand-Saconnex and Onex. The department justifies its project by the growth in the number of children monitored by the Medical-Pedagogical Office (OMP), which leads to “a very clear increase in the need for premises”. Its forecasts are for an increase of 278 students over the next five years, which is equivalent to a need for 18 additional structures. These credits should also make it possible to replace outdated and too small buildings.
