The month of December is usually a special time for scammers. Fake garbage collectors, false firefighter calendars… Deceptive and fraudulent initiatives are multiplying.
Fraudulent calls
On December 4, 2024, the town of Ramonville-Saint-Agne (Haute-Garonne), near Toulouse, alerted its residents:
“In recent days, fraudulent calls have increased regarding the sale/repair of roofs or windows, among others. These people say they are mandated by the Ramonville town hall. Be careful, Ramonville town hall has not hired anyone to canvass. This is therefore fraudulent canvassing.”
The town hall gives several tips that can be used in any municipality.
Tips to avoid getting scammed
Here are these tips if you are faced with a direct seller by telephone:
- Make sure the company calling you exists.
- Do not tell your interlocutor the time slots during which you will be away from home.
- Do not give out your bank details.
- If you persist or have serious doubts, you can also contact the police by telephone at number 17.
As a reminder, the offense of fraud is punishable by 5 years in prison and a fine of €375,000. If the fraud was committed by an organized gang, the maximum penalties are 10 years in prison and a fine of €1,000,000.
