The United States threatens to ban TikTok, suspected of spying on behalf of Beijing. In Europe, the application is under investigation, but a ban still seems far from possible.
For the moment, a ban on TikTok in Europe is not on the agenda. However, the situation could evolve depending on American decisions. The United States is seriously threatening to ban TikTok on its territory. The application’s parent company, ByteDance, has until January 19 to sell TikTok to an American owner. Otherwise, the application could be banned from the United States.
This decision stems from an anti-TikTok law adopted by Congress, aimed at preventing the risks of spying and manipulation of users by Beijing.
TikTok does not give up
TikTok has already reacted: Monday, the day before yesterday, the company asked the Supreme Court to suspend the application of this law. At the same time, the boss of TikTok met Donald Trump the same day, but no details have leaked from this exchange.
As a reminder, during his first term, Donald Trump had already tried, unsuccessfully, to ban TikTok. Today, he seems to have changed his position, even admitting to enjoying the application.
What about in Europe?
In Europe, a ban on TikTok seems unlikely at the moment. However, the European Commission is investigating several points:
Alleged failures to protect minors. The lack of transparency of algorithms. The possibility of transfer of user data to China. If these violations are proven, TikTok could be ordered to pay fines of up to 6% of its turnover.
In addition, another procedure was launched against the application. Europe suspects TikTok of having influenced the presidential election in Romania in favor of Russia. If this accusation is confirmed, a similar fine of 6% of turnover could also be imposed. However, no explicit threat of a ban has been made at this time.
The domino effect of a possible US ban
If the United States takes action on January 19 and bans TikTok, Europe could decide to follow their example. However, it will be necessary to closely monitor the possible retaliatory measures that China could adopt in response.
TikTok already banned in some countries
As of today, TikTok is banned in countries like Nepal, India, Jordan, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The application is also inaccessible to those under 13 years old.
The reasons for these bans are mainly linked to the alleged links between TikTok and Beijing, as well as the controversial management of users’ personal data.
