It’s a symbolic milestone which will soon be officially crossed by the municipality ofbleach in the Tarn. The largest city in the department has indeed gained more inhabitants.
According to figures which will very soon be made public by INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies), the population of Albi exceeds 50,000 inhabitants (reference population at 1is January 2022, entry into force on 1is January 2025). There will be 50 605.
An announcement which was made to the municipal council on Monday December 16, 2024. Before therefore, the official publication of INSEE figures, expected at the end of December.
Almost double that of a century ago
In the figures published last year at the same time (reference population at 1is January 2021, entry into force on 1is January 2024), there were 49,714 inhabitants in the Tarn prefecture.
That’s almost double what it was a century ago. Indeed, between 1911 and 1926, the city’s population increased from 25,100 to 29,015 inhabitants.
The symbolic milestone of 10,000 inhabitants dates back to the very beginning of the 19th century.e century. That of 20,000 inhabitants was reached in the 1880s. For the milestone of 30,000, we had to wait until the 1930s. Then the 1960s for the 40,000.
After stagnation in the 1980s and 1990s
The Albigensian population stopped increasing in the 1980s and 1990s, with the town even having “lost” residents in certain years. Before the numbers started to rise again in the 2000s to climb more slowly, but surely. Twenty years ago there were around 48,000 souls in the hometown of the painter Toulouse-Lautrec. Fifteen years ago, we reached 49,000. And so, today, now, 50,000.
Castres far behind
A figure which risks making the eternal rival, Castres, jealous. For a long time it was briefly a prefecture before becoming a sub-prefecture, had more inhabitants than Albi. Which ended up being slightly ahead of us a century ago, in the 1920s. But until the 1990s, there were more or less the same number of inhabitants in both cities, within a few hundred, sometimes within a few dozen. At this time, Castres continued to lose inhabitants, while Albi gained them again. Today, the town on the Agout has “only” a little more than 42,000.
Finally, note that this milestone will lead to a medium-term change for the City. In fact, the municipal council will have to pass from 43 to 45 elected officials in the next elections (in 2026).
