“Making Brazilian football respected internationally again“. With these words, Ronaldo announced, Monday December 16, his desire to become the next president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). The former Seleção star promises “change” to absorb a “deep crisis” among the five-time world champions.
“The Seleçao must recover its prestige. I will do everything so that the players understand the historical importance of playing for the national team“said Ronaldo, 48, in an interview published Monday evening by the Globoesporte site. “My goal is to bring the people closer to the Seleçao. Today, the people are indifferent when the Seleçao plays“.
The current president, Ednaldo Rodrigues, was widely criticized for placing interim coaches after the departure of Tite in 2022, pending the possible arrival of the Italian Carlo Ancelotti, who finally decided to extend his contract with Real Madrid . Now under the leadership of Dorival Junior, the Seleçao is only fifth in South American qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, seven points behind the Argentinian leader.
Ronaldo already has experience as a manager. In 2018, he became a majority shareholder of the Spanish club Valladolid, which he currently chairs. He announced on Monday that “negotiations to sell very soon“his shares of the Spanish club to avoid”any impediment to his candidacy” as president of the CBF.
To submit his candidacy, the double world champion (1994 and 2002) and double Ballon d’Or (1997 and 2002) must benefit from the support of clubs and regional federations. The date of the next election for the presidency of the CBF has not yet been set.
