When we talk to you about speed cameras and flashing lights, many of you promise that you are good drivers. And yet… “Three weeks ago, I was flashed at 6 km/h above the speed limit. I said to myself: ‘I had a lack of attention and I got caught, that’s it'”recognizes a young man in the report above. “It’s happened to me in the last two years, three times.” admits a retiree.

Today, we still have more than 15 different devices

Pascal Pennec, journalist at “L’Argus automobile”

Do radars flash us more often? The answer is yes, but there are also more of them. There are currently 3,268 of them, according to a file from the Ministry of the Interior listing all the fixed radars in service in October 2024. The devices deployed are thus detailed, sorted according to the eight types of models which coexist on the side of the roads (not counting, therefore, mobile and autonomous), with their serial number, their date of installation, their precise GPS coordinates and the speed limit in force at the place where they are positioned. And don’t be jealous: they are spread throughout France. There are 411 in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the largest region in France, 171 in and 20 in Corsica, according to L’Argus.

The flash champion is the good old classic radar with more than 23 triggers per day and per device. Even though new models continue to arrive on our roads. “Today, we still have more than 15 different devices and if we combine all the different generations, we now have 30 different systems. It’s completely incredible”estimates Pascal Pennec, journalist at L’Argus automobile.

The new kid on the block is the urban radar. His specialty: deterrence. In , 19 boxes have been installed, but only five contain a radar. And it’s impossible to know which ones. Especially since these radars change housing regularly. A rather effective policeman since“we have a very significant drop in speed in the city and especially in 2024 we have a huge gain. We had 8 deaths in 2023. We have zero in 2024”says Alain Charrier, prefect of the Territory of Belfort.
