A drama played out this weekend in Martigues, in Bouches-du-Rhône, during an engagement party. What was supposed to be a festive evening degenerated into an episode of extreme violence, according to a police source. The events took place around 3 a.m. in a multipurpose room where two families were gathered to celebrate the event.
An altercation surrounding an alleged theft
It all started when a theft was reported. Two individuals were suspected of having stolen the bag from one of the guests. Faced with these accusations, they were allegedly attacked by several guests, triggering a violent brawl. According to the first elements of the investigation, an automatic weapon was even displayed during the altercation.
Three seriously injured, life threatening
Tensions peaked when the two suspects attempted to rush away from the scene in a car. In their escape, they hit three young guests aged 18 to 19 years old. The victims, seriously injured, were treated by emergency services in critical condition, with their vital prognosis in jeopardy.
A man found injured and two arrests
A few meters from the room, emergency services and police discovered a man seriously injured in the finger, hiding in a bush with an accomplice. Investigators suspect that this individual was injured while trying to flee. When he was arrested, he was carrying the keys to a car suspected of being involved in the accident that injured the three young people.
Another man was arrested shortly after, while he was driving the same vehicle.
An investigation to shed light
Investigations are continuing to clarify the exact circumstances of this tragic evening. Investigators will have to determine the responsibilities and role of each protagonist, particularly with regard to the use of the automatic weapon and the events leading to the car escape.
This drama once again highlights the dangers of violent altercations which can quickly degenerate and cause tragic consequences.
