German international Thomas Müller, winner of the 2014 World Cup, is retiring from international duty. He announced it ten days after his country’s defeat in the quarter-final of the Euro.

“After 131 international matches and 45 goals, today I say goodbye to the eagle (emblem of the German team, editor’s note),” he announced on his social networks. In this video, staged on a football field in the small Bavarian town of Pähl where “it all began” for the 34-year-old player, Thomas Müller wanted to “thank” his supporters.

“We celebrated together and sometimes cried together, I would like to say thank you to all the fans,” he declared, the day after Spain’s victory against England (2-1 ) in the final of Euro 2024, organized in Germany. “I have always been very proud to play for my country,” he added.

After the German team’s defeat against La Roja on Friday July 5 in the quarter-final, Thomas Müller had already declared that it was “very probably” his last match with the national team. The striker will, however, continue to play for his club Bayern Munich, where he extended his contract last December until the summer of 2025.
