This operation has a dual objective, “prevention and repression”, explains the sub-prefect of Dax, Éric Requet, present this Wednesday, December 11, at the Océan roundabout, in Saint-Paul-lès-Dax. A large national police force was deployed around 2 p.m. to control motorists on this heavily used route.
Seeing “blue” on the side of the road
“The accident statistics* at this time of year are not good,” explains the sub-prefect. What is important is to see “blue” on the roadsides to encourage drivers to think about their driving and also to anticipate their organization as the holidays approach.”
“We are going to intensify these controls”
Around ten police officers from the Dax departmental public security directorate were present, helped by motorized reinforcements from Pau and a police officer from the Bayonne dog brigade.
“I am now asking road users to think about who will be the Sam, the one who does not drink” insists Éric Requet who assures that these controls will become more pronounced in the days to come: “as the “we are going to move towards the holidays, we are going to intensify these controls with particular attention to Christmas and especially New Year's Eve.”
A similar operation took place this Wednesday afternoon at the so-called racecourse roundabout, still in Saint-Paul-lès-Dax, with the same mission: to show the presence of the police, while the start a period where accident rates are increasing sharply.
*As of December 11, 2024, there was one more person who died on the roads of the Landes (30 deaths). Furthermore, since the start of the year, 234 injuries have been recorded compared to 212 in 2023.
