Launch of the three days of the “My clean island” operation, carried out by SIDEVAM 976. The day of December 5 was exclusively devoted to administrations, invited to take part in the cleaning of the town of Mamoudzou. During these three days, the entire Mahorese population is called upon to join the movement.

Gloves, garbage bags and a good pair of sneakers on your feet… the ideal equipment for taking part in “My Clean Island”. Launched this Thursday, December 5, for three days, this cleaning operation aims to encourage the Mahorese population to clean the streets of Mayotte. This initiative supported by SIDEVAM and the department has a double objective; clean up the island and raise awareness among the population.

City services were specially closed this Thursday, December 5, to allow agents to participate in the cleaning of Mamoudzou – with the exception of the municipal police, security services, ATSEM, temporary workers as well as the antenna of civil status for the declaration of births to the CHM.

For the occasion, the prefect of Mayotte, François-Xavier BIEUVILLE, and the mayor of Mamoudzou, Ambdilwahedou SOUMAILA, both put on their gloves and took part in the waste collection. They were surrounded by around fifty participants, all keen to make their city cleaner.

The prefect of Mayotte explained that,“Mayotte is not a clean island, we must admit. Today we have a problem of eco-responsibility. Our fellow citizens must understand that the slightest trash, the slightest plastic object, the slightest can creates tens, hundreds of years to disappear in nature and have a lasting impact on the environment and undermine the integrity of this environment.

But the problem of waste management is not new in Mayotte. The island's inhabitants regularly complain about unsanitary conditions, which are particularly worrying in several neighborhoods. If some believe that public services lack resources, others rather point the finger at the lack of civility on the part of the population.

Faced with this situation, the “My own island” operation aims to raise awareness among the Mahorese population and more specifically among young people. This is the objective of Saindou SANDEM, one of the organizers leading the event, “We must raise awareness among the Mahorais of the need to thoroughly clean the Mahorais territory and above all raise awareness among young people because they are the adults of tomorrow”.
