Four days after the rout of Zurich against Germany (0-6), Switzerland raised its head. This time she was able to limit the damage in Sheffield to only lose 1-0 to England this Tuesday evening.
Even if the reigning European Champions fielded a very youthful team, the Swiss deserve much praise. Their esprit de corps and their sense of sacrifice allowed them to defend very well. They were only beaten by a success from Manchester United player Grace Clinton in the 8th minute which appeared after Elvira Herzog had been saved by her post.
A forgotten penalty?
Switzerland could even have snatched a draw at the end of the match if the referee had awarded in favor of Iman Beney. But the fault suffered by the Valaisanne was not considered too obvious by Madame Campos…
Despite this defeat, Switzerland concludes its year on a good note. We must not forget that Pia Sundhage was deprived of several executives in Sheffield. Despite all the absentees, the Swede did not hesitate to relegate Alisha Lehmann to the bench. The Juventus player paid a heavy price for her catastrophic first half against Germany. With this strong choice, Pia Sundhage demonstrates that there will be no privileges in her team next year at the Euro.
