Panama had several chances to equalize, and it was a familiar face of Mexican soccer, Tijuana’s Marta Cox, who took a free kick and hit the post. Unfortunately for Mexico, the rebound hit goalkeeper Celeste Espino, resulting in an own goal that put the two teams level before halftime.
In the second half, the difficult weather conditions penalized the players of both nations, because the intense heat of Mérida reduced the physical performance of both teams. This situation led to few dangerous chances in a second half that lacked animation, ultimately ending in a 1-1 draw, thus marking the conclusion of the activities of the Mexican women’s national team.
