The teachers are angry. This Thursday, December 5, the various teaching unions announced a strike in , which should be strongly followed in the schools of Haute-Garonne. Indeed, according to FSU-SNUipp 31, 85% of professors plan not to carry out their mission tomorrow. They also estimate that more than 150 establishments will close their doors in the department. But what is happening?

Why are teachers striking this Thursday?

The reasons for this strike in schools in Haute-Garonne, and elsewhere, are numerous. The FSU-SNUipp 31 first contests the three days of waiting time recently introduced. Teachers denounce an “unfair” measure which weakens staff in the event of illness. The unions then demanded the removal of this provision to preserve their current rights.

Ensuite, the announced elimination of 3,155 positions in primary education in France raises serious concernparticularly in Haute-Garonne, where the classes are already among the busiest in the country according to the union. This situation is getting worse with the announced closure of 100 classes to reinforce the “replacement brigades”.

Furthermore, the union points the finger at salaries. He explains that since 2010, teachers have lost 18% of purchasing power due to the freezing of the index point. The teachers then demand an immediate increase of 300 euros for all staff, without conditions, in order to compensate for these losses and recognize their work.

For FSU-SNUipp 31, this strike goes beyond the simple educational framework: it is part of a tense political and budgetary context. By raising awareness among the public and decision-makers, the strikers hope to put pressure on the government to review its priorities and invest in the future of education. This is why they meet at 9 a.m. at the Labor Exchange, before leaving to demonstrate. Three processions are announced in Haute-Garonne:

  • 10h : demonstration in Saint-Gaudens, Place du Pilat
  • 10h30 : demonstration in , sub-prefecture
  • 14h : large demonstration in Toulouse, Jean Jaurès metro
