Moselle: a noisy autistic child encourages kindergarten to buy noise-cancelling headphones

A decision that arouses a certain excitement in the region. In a kindergarten class in the village of Walscheid, a village in where nearly thirty students attend school, the children have had to wear noise-cancelling headphones during lessons for several weeks. The reason? A child affected by an autism spectrum disorder makes a lot of noise in class and frequently pushes cries of joy or sadness. So, to protect the ears of other students, the school management had no other solution than to equip them with hearing protection.

This option would have been chosen with the approval of the town hallwhich the latter disputes with Le Parisien. “But it is completely false to say that it was the municipality which provided this equipment”assures Mayor Michel Schiby without specifying who ultimately paid them. Obviously, the parents of students in the class stepped up, fearing that their children's learning would be biased.

However, today it seems complicated to find another solution. « The teacher is competent and invested. She is a golden teacher. But she also suffers from hearing after-effects and works with tinnitus, when the disabled child cries. And to this day, there is no evidence that the hearing of other children did not suffer from these cries.explains to Le Parisien a mother of a kindergarten student, who nevertheless wants to be understanding: “We think of this child first. It is also for him that we must find a solution who will perhaps go through different school arrangements, to allow him to find a better balance. Comments corroborated by the mayor: “With the media excitement caused by this affair, can we imagine what the mother and her son are going through? It’s them that we need to think about first.”
