Focus on the Pep'sucs associative nursery which, in Retournac, produces plants of local species, intended for the creation of hedges to promote biodiversity.

Created in 2022 by five enthusiasts, Pep'sucs is a nursery dedicated to young plants and whose particularity is to offer plants, intended for hedges, from local seeds and grown in organic farming. Some 10,000 of them were planted on a plot of 5,000 m² in the town of Retournac, in Les Freytissous, between Les Fromentaux and La Navette. We find tree species from the territories of Emblavez, Sucs, Mézenc and Meygal.

“Our forests are suffering! More than ever, we must offer the production of trees to be replanted to preserve our ecosystems,” explains Aude Mazier, member of the Emblavez collective, at the initiative of Pep'sucs. Especially since “faced with climate issues and for biodiversity, trees are a solution, in hedges, in agroforestry or in cities”. At the initiative of this nursery like no other, we find the Emblavez collective made up of Aude Mazier, Jean Ramain, Marilou Luque, Maxence Delfrate and Roland Fournel, nurseryman in Malrevers. “Pep'sucs is a nursery, in other words we start from the seed to reach the tree. It’s an activity that has been lost a lot these days,” underlines Aude Mazier.

Towards labeling, activities and training?

The associative nursery has passed the “Végétal local” brand audit. “We will know if we are certified in December. This mark from the National Biodiversity Office guarantees the local origin of the seeds, it is supplemented by the AB label, underlines Aude Mazier. As a result, we hope to be, from January, the only nursery in Auvergne to offer the Végétal local brand and the AB label, which are very complementary.” The Pep'sucs team also wishes to offer ornamental and fruit production in the years to come.

Last component which will be developed: animation and training with the aim of introducing a little-known profession and transmitting the basics of the multiplication of woody plants to individuals and professionals. “We realize that a lot of knowledge has been lost. To protect the tree, you must already know it. Our ambition is to restore a culture of local plant heritage through our training,” continues Roland Fournel. The collective is working on a training catalog. Ultimately, the nursery could take the form of a cooperative and participatory company (Scop) or a joint farming group (Gaec).
