The post-World Cup year allowed many players to wear the French XV jersey. The pool is rich, and Fabien Galthié has taken advantage of it. The summer tour, with the rest of the Premium elements and the absence of the Top 14 finalists, allowed a large squad review (the match against Uruguay, which is not an official cap, is account). In total, 75 of them have played at least once in 2024. And more broadly, Galthié has summoned 92 different elements. Zoom on these 17 players called up who did not have the chance to set foot on the pitch and intone the Marseillaise.
Tournoi des 6 Nations 2024 : Halagahu, Gibert, Burin…
During the 2024 6 Nations Tournament, during which Fabien Galthié used 33 players (a record), 6 of them were called up without playing. Among them, let us highlight elements already covered such as the pillar of Toulon Dany Priso (18 selections) or the center of Toulouse Pierre-Louis Barassi (3 selections).
Antoine Gibert, Matthias Halagahu, Dany Priso et Maxime Lamothe each had the right to be among the 5 reservists during this 6 Nations Tournament, therefore only attending a meeting from the stands at best. Finally, we had almost forgotten it: the XV of France summoned the right pillar Alex BurinPro D2 player, after the withdrawal of Thomas Laclayat for France-Italy.
Summer tour in Argentina: the case of Simeli Daunivucu
The French XV left for South America with a group of 42 players, and almost all of them played because the program was very dense: 3 matches in the space of 8 days (during the week against Uruguay).
Summoned, the Montpellier opening half (today at Stade Français) Louis Carbonel withdrew before even boarding the plane. The pillar of Grenoble, today in Clermont, Régis Montagnewas called in for reinforcement during the competition after the exclusion of Melvyn Jaminet, for comments with racist connotations made in a video published on one of his social networks.
Finally, there is the very particular case of Simeli Daunivucu. The La Rochelle center, who was applying for the U20 World Cup in South Africa, was called by Fabien Galthié and his staff. Ultimately, the young player of Fijian origin was never fielded. Sébastien Calvet and the Bleuets would not have been unhappy to be able to count on his talent…
- Louis Carbonel (Montpellier, then Stade Français)
- Régis Montagne (Grenoble, then Clermont)
- Simeli Daunivucu (La Rochelle)
Autumn tour: Jelonch, Costes, Matiu
Finally, it is during the fall 2024 tour (30 different players lined up) that we have the most elements called up and who did not play. The fact for Fabien Galthié of being able to count on 42 players counted.
Back after a second serious knee injury, on 3e ligne Anthony Jelonch (29 caps), who was captain of the Blues during Galthié's first mandate, did not make the cut. Lamothe, Montagne and Barassi were once again summoned, without being aligned.
While he was supposed to arrive as reinforcement, the pillar of Bordeaux-Bègles World Civil War didn't even join the Blues, ultimately he was also injured. Brennan, Costes, Le Brun, Tiberghien, Bochaton et Matthew bear witness to the immense wealth of French rugby.
