In Orne, natural cleaning products for the home: “preserving our health”

As part of the 2024 program “Otters up, desert in sight!” » in favor of the ecological transitionthe CPIE (Permanent Center for Environmental Initiatives) in the Normandy hills made it possible to discover recipes, but also good practices for the maintenance of one's house, in Ségrie-Fontaine (Orne).

Find tips

Five participants joined the speaker at the landscape house. Most of them already manufactured their cleaning products, but all had different motivations to participate in this transition café: “find tips, broaden their scope of action, develop their knowledge or even reduce the quantity of different products”.

For one mother present, she wanted to “learn more about the toxicity of productsbecause I worry when my little girl crawls on the ground.” Another, subject to numerous allergies, was looking to find recipes for less allergenic products.

Product composition

Valérie Daumail therefore suggested that they take an interest in the compositions of the products purchased before moving on to practice by manufacturing super simple recipes : a multi-purpose disinfectant cleaner, and laundry detergent.

For the CPIE employee, “we must not not demonize the cleaning products soldtheir composition has evolved a lot in recent years, it is however interesting to know the meaning of the orange logos affixed to these products, and to discover their corrosive, irritant side or their impact on the environment.

Dual lens

Valérie Daumail wanted to raise the participants' attention to the impact of these different products on the skin, the body, but also on the environment, to then look at what to replace these used products.

“The dual objective is to preserve our health and the health of our environment, knowing that any cleaning product, whatever it is, will have an impact on the environment ».

Simple and economical recipes

She reminds us that there is different types of products : “detergents for surfaces and laundry, the objective of which is to degrease and remove particles and organic matter (dirt) and disinfectants which kill bacteria on the disinfected surface”.

For the speaker, “there is no need to have a lot of products to maintain your interior : white vinegar for windows and floors for its acidic properties and its slightly degreasing and disinfectant benefits and black soap for its multi-use product side.
