Under the leadership of Ms. Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, and Mr. Nobumitsu Hayashi, Governor of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), a strategic memorandum of understanding was signed on November 15 last in Baku, Azerbaijan, marking an important step in the strengthening of bilateral relations between Morocco and Japan, during a ceremony at the Morocco Pavilion, on the sidelines of the COP29.
This partnership aims to deepen cooperation in key sectors of common interest, in particular: the energy transition, the production of renewable energies, the transport and distribution of electricity, as well as waste management, the circular economy, adaptation to climate change, decarbonization of industrial supply chains, energy efficiency, regional integration, the development of green hydrogen and its derivatives, and the use of artificial intelligence.
Through this partnership, JBIC is committed to supporting Moroccan projects aligned with energy transition objectives, thus contributing to sustainable development and climate resilience in Morocco.
Mrs. Leila Benali welcomed, on the occasion, this strategic agreement by emphasizing the importance of public-private partnerships (PPP) between Morocco and Japan. She also highlighted the crucial role of investments in energy infrastructure and research and development (R&D) in sustainable energy.
This signing is part of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29), which focuses on climate financing. The main objective is to mobilize the necessary resources to help countries reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while protecting vulnerable populations from the increasing effects of climate change.
This strategic partnership between Morocco and JBIC illustrates the commitment of both parties to work for a sustainable future, while stimulating economic and technological exchanges in the field of clean energy.
