the far right in the lead in Gironde, the left in Bordeaux Métropole

Another symptom of the far-right wave that swept the country on Sunday, the RN has significantly strengthened its positions in Gironde compared to 2022, where its candidates qualified for the second round in four out of twelve constituencies and where it sent, for the first time, two deputies to the National Assembly. At the end of this first round of the 2024 legislative elections, the far-right has qualified for the second round in three-quarters of the Gironde constituencies and came out on top in half. In Blayais, the outgoing RN deputy Edwige Diaz was re-elected in the first round, gathering almost twice as many ballots in her name as two years ago.

The six constituencies of Bordeaux Métropole, however, place five candidates from the New Popular Front and the Macronist candidate Thomas Cazenave in the lead. The political mechanism of the Republican withdrawals of the Ensemble and NFP candidates to block the far-right should however limit the number of RN deputies and save the day of several outgoing Macronist deputies who find themselves in great difficulty at the end of this first round.

An update on the results in the department as participation reached 66.7%, the highest level for 27 years.

  • Thomas Cazenave in the lead in Bordeaux.

In the 1st constituency of Gironde, which includes Bordeaux Nord, Bruges and Le Bouscat, the Macronist Thomas Cazenave came first with 38.3% of the votes cast, four points ahead of New Popular Front ecologist Céline Papin (34.2%). Bruno Paluteau (RN) also qualifies for the second round with 21%. The Minister of Public Accounts obtained 28,600 ballots in his name, or 9,000 more than in the first round of the 2022 legislative elections and as many as in the second round. Enough to distance the environmentalist candidate who nevertheless won 11,000 ballots compared to the score of Catherine Cestari in 2022 (25,500 votes against 14,000).

At the same time, the far-right managed to triple its number of voters (15,700 against 4,900), reaching a historic level in this urban constituency which combines wealthy and working-class neighborhoods. The second round will therefore be played in a triangular and the candidate Ensemble, the only one to have come first in Gironde, leaves in a favorable ballot. In 2022, he won with 59.1% in the second round.

Legislative: Thomas Cazenave plays part of his political future in Bordeaux

  • Nicolas Thierry narrowly misses the election in the first round in Bordeaux

With more than 26,500 ballots in his name compared to 17,100 in 2022, the outgoing MP (ecologist/NFP) Nicolas Thierry came very close to winning in Bordeaux center (2nd district) in the first round. He garnered 49.5% of the vote and was twenty points ahead of Ensemble candidate Véronique Juramy (29.1%) who only convinced 3,000 more voters than Catherine Fabre in 2022. Despite 14%, historically high score in Bordeaux and three higher than in 2022, the far-right is not qualified. Nicolas Thierry is therefore in a very favorable position for his second round duel against Véronique Juramy.

  • Loïc Prud’homme within a hair’s breadth of victory in the first round in Bordeaux

In the 3rd constituency of Gironde (Bordeaux Sud, Bègles, Villenave-d’Ornon), Loïc Prud’homme (NFP/LFI) obtained 49.8% of the votes in the first round, gathering 30,700 votes. Despite 11,000 more ballots than in the first round of 2022, the outgoing MP failed by a few dozen votes to win the election in the first round but far outdistanced the candidate Ensemble Ariane Ary (27.8%) and that of the extreme right (19.6%). He therefore starts in an extremely favorable runoff in the second round on July 7.

Emmanuel Macron’s failed bets

  • Edwige Diaz (RN) elected in the 1st round

In the 11th constituency of Blayais, north of Gironde, the outgoing far-right MP Edwige Diaz was elected in the first round with 53.3% of the votes cast, ahead of Ensemble candidate Véronique Hammerer (22.5%) and NFP candidate Cécilia Fonseca (22%). The National Rally MP gathered 34,600 votes on her behalf, almost double the first round of the 2022 legislative elections (18,700 votes).

In the 5th constituency of Médoc, the outgoing far-right deputy Gregory of Fournas narrowly missed re-election in the first round with 45.8% of the vote and 29,300 ballots, compared to 16,700 votes in the first round in 2022. He is well ahead of the socialist (NFP) Pascale Got (29.4%) and the Renaissance candidate Stéphane Sence (17.7%) who should therefore withdraw. The second round should therefore be played out between the RN and the New Popular Front.

  • PS in the lead in Bordeaux Métropole

Candidate Together in the 7th constituency of Gironde around Pessac, the outgoing MP Bérangère Couillard is in an unfavorable ballot. Despite 3,500 more votes than in 2022, the former Minister of Ecology and then of Gender Equality only comes in 2nd position (33.1%) five points behind the socialist Sebastian Saint-Pasteur (NFP) who came clearly in the lead with 38.5% of the vote. The second round will be played out in a three-way race with the far-right candidate Clémence Navays-Dumas, who came in third place (22.4%).

On the right bank of the agglomeration, the outgoing deputy (PS/NFP) Alain David comes well ahead in the 4th constituency with 42.4%, ten points ahead of far-right candidate Julie Rechagneux (32.4%). He is on a favorable ballot for the duel in the second round.

To the west, in the 6th constituency, around Mérignac, the socialist Marie Récaldedeputy mayor of Mérignac, came in first with 35.2%, just ahead of the outgoing MP (Ensemble) Eric Pouillat (32.8%). There will be a three-way race in the second round with the far-right candidate Jimmy Bourlieux, who came in third (27.1%).

Legislative: “Macronist bloc erased”, call for “new republican front”: the main political reactions

  • The far right in the lead everywhere else

In the Arcachon basin (8th constituency), the outgoing MP (Ensemble) Sophie Panonacle won 31.8% of the vote. She was five points behind the RN candidate Laurent Lamara (36.8%) but will benefit in the second round from the Republican withdrawal of Marylène Faure (NFP), who came third with 18.7%.

In South Gironde (9th constituency), the outgoing MP (Together) Sophie Mette is also ahead of the far-right represented by François-Xavier Marques (30% against 38.5%). She will benefit in the second round from the Republican withdrawal of Corinne Martinez (NFP), who came third with 27.9%.

Further east, in the tenth district of Libourne, the far-right is also well ahead. The RN candidate Sandrine Chadourne came in first place (43.8%) far ahead of the outgoing Ensemble MP Florent Boudié (30%) and Pascal Bourgois, the candidate of the New Popular Front (24.3%) who withdrew in the second round.

Finally, a similar scenario in Entre-deux-mers, the RN candidate Rémy Berthonneau (38.4%), finished ten points ahead of the left union candidate Mathilde Feld (28.9%) and ahead of the outgoing Ensemble deputy Pascal Lavergne (27.6%) who must therefore withdraw in view of the second round.
