The parking meter scam is back in Albi. Several complaints have been filed by elderly people who have had their bank cards stolen. The scammer(s) are using a technique that has been observed in the past. Be careful.
The Albi Police station recorded two complaints in a short time for parking meter scams in the city center. The technique used by the thieves is not new and has been used in the past.
The victims are people aged 70 – 80 years old. They had their bank card and code stolen while trying to help a man in downtown Albi.
A “very nice and personable” scammer
Waiting for his prey, the scammer, “very nice and well-presented” the police specify, claims to be unable to pay for his parking. The victims then offer to pay for him, insert their card, enter the code, immediately memorized by the thief who, thanks to a clever manipulation, recovers the card.
Parking meters do not store bank cards
Taking advantage of the fact that the elderly are surprised and confused by the situation, he then explains that the parking meter has swallowed the card, indicates that he is going to get help and disappears… to go to the nearest ATM and withdraw money.
The Albi police station therefore calls for caution and reminds people that parking meters “do not swallow bank cards”.
