Shis story is tragic. The fate of Antoine Vivenel (1799-1862) resembles that of a Dickensian hero. This architect, who became one of the most prominent Parisian real estate developers of the first half of the 19th century,e century, indeed ended his life in great destitution.
If his name has gone down in history today, it is not because of this painful reversal of fortune but because this art lover built up an exceptional collection of ancient works. Over the course of his life, he collected some four thousand archaeological pieces, including more than 250 exceptional Hellenistic ceramics.
