Bishop of Limoges (IIIe century). Very little is known about Saint Martial. Probably originating from the East, sent by a Roman pontiff, he arrived in Limousin, he preached in Toulx-Sainte-Croix, in Ahun. Arriving in Limoges, he settled there, founded a Christian center, converted a certain number of inhabitants belonging in particular to the high society, and set up a sanctuary outside the town. He made a few evangelization trips but rarely penetrated the countryside which remained pagan. He died in Limoges and was buried in a tomb outside the city.

The legend of Saint Martial was created in the 10th century by the monks of the Abbey of Saint Martial who wanted to increase the prestige of their patron saint by making him a disciple of Christ, sent to Gaul by Saint Peter. This legend was fought in the 17th and 19th centuries, however Saint Martial was indeed one of the first missionaries of Gaul and the founder of the Church of Limoges.
