Professor and researcher from the Faculty of Law of the University of Montreal Pierre Noreau is the winner of an Impact 2024 prize. The Impact prizes, awarded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (CRSH), highlight the best work of researchers and students carried out as part of research, research training or knowledge mobilization activities funded by SSHRC.

The Impact – Partnership Award recognizes the exceptional contribution of a formal SSHRC-funded partnership relating to research, research training, knowledge mobilization or the development of a new research partnership approach or related activities. Pierre Noreau was awarded this prize for his Access to Law and Justice (ADAJ) consortium, formed to promote equitable access to law and justice.

Created in 2015, ADAJ is a project that makes an exceptional contribution to the development of knowledge on law and justice, to the training of the next generation and to the establishment of collaborative research in Quebec and Canada. This consortium brings together more than 60 researchers from 10 universities and 70 partners from community, institutional, university and professional sectors.

The Access to Law and Justice consortium was designed to find solutions to the problems posed by the complex relationships that people have with the legal world, despite the promise of equality carried by the democratic ideal and the principles which underpin the ‘Rule of law. Let us think, among other things, of the difficulties in accessing the law (e.g. the fact that non-specialists have little or no understanding of legal texts) and the lack of means to be represented in court. With this in mind, the consortium was structured around 27 research projects, each focused on a distinct theme and aiming to link research and the concrete practice of law.

In October, Pierre Noreau also received the Justice Prize, which is the highest honor awarded in the legal field.
