A camel milking competition was held on Thursday, June 27, in Tan-Tan, an activity organized as part of the 17th edition of the Moussem of the southern city. The tournament was based on several criteria, the most important of which are the quantity and quality of the milk collected, both of which are controlled by the organizing committee under the supervision of Emirati partner officials.

Mohamed Abdallah Lamhiri, in charge of heritage activities at the Moussem de Tan-Tan, explains that the main objective of the competition is “to encourage camel breeders in the southern provinces, who benefit from state aid, to take care of their herds“, emphasizing that the number of participants has increased significantly during this 2024 edition.

For his part, breeder Omar Bridji said that this year’s competition included some new features compared to previous editions, the number of participants having reached some 238 people, including 70 camel drivers, who came to Tan-Tan from all over the world. southern provinces.

Organized by the Almouggar Foundation under the High Patronage of King Mohammed VI, the 17th edition of the Moussem opened the day before under the theme: “Moussem de Tan-Tan: 20 years of safeguarding and human development».

The opening ceremony was marked by the inauguration of the Moroccan and Emirati thematic tents installed on the Peace and Tolerance Square by Mohamed Fadel Benyaich, President of the Almouggar Foundation, Amrou Hamda, Acting Governor of the Province of Tan-Tan, Abdullah Al-Kbissi, Director of the United Arab Emirates Stand. Camel races and Tbourida shows were also presented during this ceremony.

Intangible heritage of humanity

The Tan-Tan Moussem, inscribed by UNESCO in 2008 on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, is a flagship event which brings together around thirty nomadic tribes who meet to discuss the preservation of their heritage respective culture, particularly through music, dance, crafts and traditional rites.

The program for this 17th edition will thus offer an immersive experience in nomadic culture, via traditional shows, poetry evenings, craft demonstrations, Tbouridas, camel races and exhibitions planned throughout the event. , highlighting the living heritage of the region.
