The island of Bréhat was requested by the prefecture of Côtes-d'Armor to integrate the new ranking to the study of moors and forests at the department level. A classification intended to respond in a manner adapted to the fire risk

This involves listing the massifs and ensuring their maintenance, particularly with the aim of protecting any homes that may exist nearby.

Anticipate access difficulties on the island

On Bréhat, the prefecture has identified wooded areas and moors where are nested of the habitations.

The prefecture also highlighted the possible difficulties d’emergency access andaccess to water on the island to justify this invitation to join the ranking.

What Ranking Entails

Integration into the departmental classification involves carrying out a detailed map of the massif and theobligation legal clearing around the habitations and the roads (over a distance of 50 m) in order to create a mandatory protection perimeter.

If an owner of undeveloped land refuses to maintain it, the obligation falls to the owner of the nearest house.

Restriction of movement in areas may be decided in the event of a period of drought.

Marion Régler, 3rd deputy mayor of Bréhat

The fire on the north island 6 or 7 years ago

In 2023, even has been affected by fires and they could be more frequent in the future.

Mayor Olivier Carré

To argue in favor of classification, he recalls that the island experienced “7 or 8 years ago a fire on the north island, it was necessary to intervene at low tide and the fight lasted all night. This ranking will also allow us to have the support of the SDIS and to raise awareness. »

And the small islands?

The ranking will be prepared in partnership with the firefighters and the owners and aid for animation is also planned for the municipalities integrating the system.

Jean-Luc Le Pache, opposition advisor, points out that heavily wooded places do not appear in this first proposed classification.

These are the Lavrec Islands and Logodec, or even Raguenès which is close to Béniguet.

Do they know that there is a house in Logodec? If there is a large fire on this island, it can spread quickly if it is windy. There are also trees in Lavrec around the oldest ruins in Brittany, you have to think about it…

Jean-Luc Le Pache

It will be possible to add these sectors and refine the map, estimates Marion Régler. “The document must be developed with local elected officials and owners. »

Integration into the ranking was voted unanimously.
