Weather: Martinique is threatened by hurricanes: News

Martinique could be hit Monday July 1 early in the afternoon by Hurricane Beryl. A second tropical precipitation could turn into a hurricane and affect the Antilles next week.

Winds of more than 120 km/h, swells of several meters… This is what the Antilles are expecting from Sunday June 30. The hurricane, named Beryl by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), is growing day by day, going from a tropical wave on Thursday, June 27, to a storm on Friday, 28, until it becomes a hurricane on Monday, July 1, reports Le Parisian.

The strengthening of this hurricane is faster than expected and its trajectory is getting closer and closer to Martinique with each update. Beryl should cross the West Indian arc on Monday. Barbados, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia and Martinique would be the most exposed territories according to the latest predictions.

A probable second hurricane

But the rain and wind gusts, as well as the 5-meter waves, of Hurricane Beryl will soon be joined by another major weather event. A new tropical wave is forming in the same place as the one that became Hurricane Beryl. According to the NHC, there is a 40% to 60% chance that it will become a hurricane in the coming days, and reach the Caribbean next week.

States and prefectures are preparing. Barbados has been placed on cyclone alert. Météo-France does not rule out the fact that Beryl becomes a category 2 hurricane, which would directly increase the alert level on the French island.
