Press release of June 29, 2024

Haut-Rhin has been placed on “orange alert” by Météo France for a stormy phenomenon which requires particular vigilance and caution.

These storms will follow a particularly hot day.

The most intense phenomena are announced in the evening, from 20h.

In addition to intense electrical activity, these storms could cause violent gusts of wind, hail and heavy accumulations of rain in a short period of time.

From this afternoon, isolated storms could break out in Alsace, with possible gusts between 40 and 60 km/h.

A deterioration is expected around 8 p.m. with particularly violent storms. They could be accompanied by:

– violent gusts of wind (80 to 100 km/h, up to 120 km/h locally),

– hailstorms with large hailstones (5cm in diameter)

– and heavy rainfall (40mm in less than an hour and very locally up to 80mm over 3 hours).

A risk of locally thunderstorms will remain until Sunday morning.

These violent storms are likely to cause significant local damage:

  • Damage to light housing and temporary installations is to be feared;
  • Flooding of cellars and low points can occur very quickly;
  • Some fires may start in the forest following lightning strikes not accompanied by precipitation.

Thierry QUEFFELECprefect ofu Haut-Rhincalls everyone to the bigger prudence and sends you the following instructions:

  • Take the usual precautions to protect objects sensitive to wind;
  • Do not take shelter under trees;
  • Avoid using landline phones and electrical appliances;
  • In case of intense rain, do not go down into basements;
  • Report any fires you witness immediately;
  • Avoid all outdoor activities and gatherings;
  • If possible, limit your travel for the duration of this stormy episode.
