Will Jordan Bardella be at Matignon in mid-July? Two days before the first round of the legislative elections, the National Rally and its allies are well ahead in voting intentions. The latest polls suggest that the far-right party, supported by part of the Republicans represented by Eric Ciotti, would obtain 36% of the vote ahead of the New Popular Front. The presidential majority party, led by current Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, comes in third place.

The French are hesitating between the prospect of an absolute far-right majority or the absence of a clear majority, which could lead to greater political instability. The threshold for a party to obtain an absolute majority is 289 seats.

“Our compatriots feel that the State no longer enforces its laws, that the State is weak with the strong and strong with the weak.” declared Jordan Bardella, President of the National Rally during the televised debate on France 2 on Thursday evening.

The far right has been able to capitalize on the growing feeling of insecurity among the French. Political forces are deeply polarized, which threatens any form of parliamentary cooperation. This is why the ruling party seeks to calm the debates.

“I also set myself this objective. That we manage to have a democracy, a National Assembly – which is perhaps more lively, less brutal. This will be good, I think, for the public debate and for the French” said Prime Minister Gabriel Attal during the televised debate on France 2.

Due to instability, social distress and potential conflict, many French people say they will go to the polls on Sunday. According to polls, the participation rate could be much higher than in previous elections. The leader of the New Popular Front proposes appointing a moderate figure to the post of Prime Minister.

“It is the Prime Minister candidate who will allow the entire left and environmentalists to come together. Because we must first bring together this majority and then bring together the French” said Olivier Faure, leader of the New Popular Front during the debate.

French President Emmanuel Macron could experience cohabitationeither with a far-right prime minister or with a centre-left coalition.
