The voters of Gironde will have seven duels and four triangulars to decide next Sunday. Beware, vertigo: the RN is lining up in ten of the 11 finals next Sunday (only in Haute-Gironde there is no re-voting, due to Edwige Diaz’s victory in the first round). In 2022, it was four and it was already unprecedented.

The candidates are in a three-way match in the constituencies of Bordeaux-Nord (1st), Bordeaux-Bègles-Talence (3rd), Mérignac (6th) and Pessac (7th) where the RN is “only” third, certainly showing historic progress (scores between 20 and 27%, never seen before in these urban areas) but not in the best position to win. They will referee Popular Front/Presidential Majority matches.

Five withdrawals from Sunday

Elsewhere, candidates who came in third withdrew in an attempt to prevent a victory for the National Rally. This is the case in the Bassin (8th) where Marylène Faure (PC, Popular Front) stepped aside in favour of the incumbent Sophie Panonacle (Renaissance), in Sud-Gironde (9th) where Corinne Martinez (PS, Popular Front) also withdrew from the race to help the incumbent Sophie Mette and in Libournais (10th) where the environmentalist Pascal Bourgois also followed the slogan of the left-wing coalition.

The presidential majority did not hesitate too much before playing the “republican front”, Sunday evening: in Entre-deux-Mers (12ᵉ), the outgoing Pascal Lavergne withdrew just after the known results to leave take place a duel between the Insoumise Mathilde Feld against the RN. And in Médoc (5ᵉ), Stéphane Sence, vying for the majority on behalf of Horizons, also withdrew his candidacy in the evening.

Mathematics

In these five “constituencies”, the RN comes out on top with an obvious dynamic: there will be a lot to do to dislodge Grégoire de Fournas from Médoc (42%, ten points ahead of the left!) and prevent the victory of François-Xavier Marquès in South Gironde (nearly 39%), Sandrine Chadourne in Libournais (42.80%) and Rémy Berthonneau in Entre-deux-Mers (38.41%). And even on the Bassin, the die is not cast.

The outgoing MP can hope to keep the constituency by adding her 32% on Sunday with the 18.75% of the Popular Front (now withdrawn, therefore) plus part of the 10% of the Republicans – the RN is at 37%. Obviously, vote carryovers are rarely automatic and Sunday’s finals are not decided by additions. This is the political challenge of this week: convincing left-wing voters to vote for a Macronist outgoing or supporters of the President to opt for a Rebel…
