Residents of Rue de la Barge and surrounding streets came in large numbers to Espace Chambon, at the invitation of the municipality, to discuss changes to the traffic plan in the area.

The cause is the narrowness of part of Rue de la Barge which, by general consensus, poses a problem for crossing on this busy road entering or leaving the city.

The mayor, Jean-Sébastien Laloy, microphone in hand, accompanied by the brand new director of technical services, Gaëtan Petite, gave extensive details of the project which would consist of making the entire rue de la Barge and its extension route de Ferrières one-way, up to the intersection with rue de Verdun.

Several concerns

Vehicles arriving from Grivats will then have to take Rue de Verdun to get to the city centre. The one-way street on Rue Jean-Désorges will be reversed, and a two-way cycle path may be created. While the outgoing one-way street seems to be widely supported by the public present, residents of Rue de Verdun and Boulevard du Gravier are concerned about the increase in traffic that will be caused in front of their homes.

Others suggest that the first part of Rue de la Barge, between the Cours and Rue du Faubourg-du-Chambon, which is wide enough, could remain two-way. Why not limit ourselves to making the narrow part of the street that is causing problems one-way?

Experiment from September to June 2025

Changing the direction of traffic in the second part of rue du Faubourg-du-Chambon is suggested to avoid detours for local residents, and was one of many comments from the public.

The councilor specified that “the technical services would take into account the opinions expressed. This is only an experiment which should take effect from September until June 2025. At the end of this trial period, the local residents concerned will be consulted again to decide whether or not the project is sustainable. .
