Kent Naganomusical director of theMontreal Symphony Orchestra from 2006 to 2020, was appointed Honorary Member of the Order of Canada.

« Kent Nagano is a leading conductor with a prestigious international career. Renowned for his operatic and orchestral repertoire, he has worked passionately to bring classical music to the general public. He captivated audiences as the conductor of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal for almost 15 years. He has premiered and commissioned numerous works from Canadian composers, thus disseminating the unique music of Montreal, Quebec and Canada throughout the world.

The passage of Kent Nagano at the head of theOSM has been marked by many achievements, including the completion of the Maison symphonique project and the acquisition of the instruments it houses (the Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique and three octobasses), the creation of the Virée classique and the launch of the La musique aux enfants program in Montréal-Nord. He has also recorded several albums with theOSMincluding three featuring the solo violinist Andrew Wan and one of the French trumpet concertos with the first trumpeter Paul Merkelo.

Kent Nagano is also an Honorary Citizen of the City of Montreal, holder of the Medal of Honor of the National Assembly of Quebec, Grand Officer of the National Order of Quebec and Companion of the Order of Arts and Letters of Quebec. The universities of Montreal and McGill have awarded him doctorates Honorary.

L’OSM also highlights the promotion of Monique Forget Lerouxvice-president of the orchestra’s board of directors and president of the Mouvement Desjardins, to the rank of Companion of the Order.

The Order of Canada

Created in 1967, the Order of Canada is Canada’s highest civilian honour, celebrating “extraordinary contributions to the nation” by Canadian citizens. Non-citizens are also eligible for honorary appointments, “provided their contributions benefit or honour Canadians or Canada.”

The singer-songwriter Daniel Lavoie and the author-director Marcelle Dubois are also among the nominees this year.
