Opera in two acts. Libretto by Felice Romani, premiered on December 26, 1831 at Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
While the moon is already high in the sky, a crowd of worshipers rustles with a thousand rumors. Will the one they are waiting for so impatiently come to practice her mysterious art before them? Some doubt it, others feverishly watch for its appearance. Finally, silence falls and their idol advances to meet them to lend themselves to ancestral worship, eyes closed and arms crossed in sublime finery. Time seems suspended on his lips which form an enigmatic smile on his impenetrable face. The much-desired miracle occurs: her golden voice rises in the greatest meditation to intone her eternal hymn, “Casta Diva”, dedicated to the lunar goddess. Behind this flawless assurance, however, lie the wounds of a woman betrayed in her love and tired of her priesthood.
Of all the romantic bel canto roles, that of Norma is renowned as one of the most demanding, requiring exceptional qualities from its performer. Abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century, it was Maria Callas who brought him out of his relative oblivion and made his cavatina a signature tune, going so far as to proclaim: “Bellini composed Norma for me. » Since then, the greatest performers have seized it. It’s Karine Deshayes’ turn to perpetuate this legacy in a new show by Marie-Eve Signeyrole directed by Andrea Sanguineti.
