Friday, November 22, the president of the Champsaur-Valgaudemar intercommunal electrification union, Dominique Goury, brought together the union council and the mayors concerned to present to them the project to renovate the public street lamps, which had become dilapidated and energy-consuming. This large-scale project – which concerns more than 3,000 households – is estimated at 3,250,000 euros excluding tax and aims to make 60% operating savings on the area to be renovated.
“In the energy transition law for green growth, communities must make considerable savings in terms of energy consumption. By 2030, France aims to reduce its overall energy consumption by 20% compared to 2012,” introduced the president of the union. The objective is to replace the existing fleet with an energy-efficient, eco-compatible public lighting network capable of responding to different uses.
Concretely, obsolete lighting fixtures will be replaced by LEDs, which have the advantage of lasting longer and allowing significant energy savings. Furthermore, they minimize light pollution and preserve local biodiversity and the well-being of residents.
60% savings planned
“The union’s proposal is to pool resources,” indicated Dominique Goury. Before giving the floor to Nicolas Mangin, the director of Génilum, a design office specializing in lighting. “These are 60% savings envisaged on an item which accounts for 41% of electricity consumption,” he specified. And added, “We will light better, the flow will go more on the road and less on the facades. The lights will no longer illuminate the celestial vault. Right now, 10-15% of the light shines toward the sky. »
The aim is to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists as much as possible by avoiding collisions with vehicles. And also to determine the right lighting for each municipality by taking into account uses and modulating lighting levels. This intelligent lighting program should start in March 2026. Before then, the design office will support the municipalities in this project and in the search for subsidies. “We will give you best practices and you will decide,” assured Nicolas Mangin.
