The Saint-Étienne University Hospital is the first establishment in France to be equipped with the da Vinci SP robotic system, a significant innovation for robot-assisted surgery.

Among the first in Europe

“The hospital becomes the first healthcare establishment in France and among the first in Europe to equip itself with this innovation, thus strengthening its capacities and expertise in minimally invasive robot-assisted surgery,” writes the Saint-Étienne University Hospital (CHU) in a press release.

Multiple benefits for patients

It allows patients to access cutting-edge surgical equipment. Robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery has many advantages for the quality of care:

  • Access to surgery for fragile patients;
  • Greater safety in performing the surgical technique and reduction of surgical complications;
  • Better recovery due to a minimalist surgical approach that is almost invisible after the operation.

A single, unique incision

The big advantage of this robot-assisted device: a single incision.

This robot-assisted technology combines 3D imaging and advanced control for greater surgical precision.

It includes three multi-articulated instruments and a fully articulating high-definition 3D camera. The instruments and camera are all connected to the same cannula, allowing a single incision to be made instead of four previously.

The overall investment is 4.8 million euros.

Uses for other interventions

This opens the way to use for endoscopic surgical interventions: abdominopelvic urological, gynecological, breast procedures and oral surgery.

The arrival of new instruments will allow other specialties to benefit from these technologies.
