Since January 2024, the Bird Hill was under construction in Caen (Calvados). The city’s most popular park, which attracts up to 450,000 visitors a year, had not closed yet. But his accesses were more difficult.
Series of events this Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The 17-hectare public garden, with a surprising past for some, is unveiling its new features and small transformations with great fanfare this Saturday, June 29, 2024. The only disappointment is that the treetop adventure park that was to be built in place of the farm and its large animals has been postponed.
For this special daywhich also marks the 30 years of existence of the Hill, the City of Caen has planned several activities, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m..
From the start, the new esplanade at the entrance will be inaugurated, renamed after Frank Duncombe, the “father” of the landscaped park.
Who was Frank Duncombe, the creator of Bird Hill?
Bird Hill owes its existence to a visionary elected official in Caen. However, Dr. Frank Duncombe, who died suddenly a year earlier, was unable to experience the opening of the landscaped park to the public in June 1994.
The mayor’s deputy for the environment, Jean-Marie Girault, had the idea in 1972. At that time, he was one of the very few to defend nature. Whether at CREPAN, at the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) or in the reserves of Brittany and Camargue, oiled or unoiled birds, such as the gannet or the Atlantic puffin, will have been the cause of its life .
It will be followed by the inauguration of the inclusive playground, The Extra Ordinary Garden, open for several weeks to children. Then, at 11:30 a.m., the baptism of the Yvonne Guégan rose, named after the prolific Caen painter haunted by the Second World War, and rediscovered thanks to the Matrimony Days.
The election of the most beautiful rose
All day long, visitors will be able to vote for their favorite rose. The winning flower will be announced at 4:30 p.m. Until then, the Société des Régates de Caen Ouistreham will hold a series of model-making demonstrations in the Roseraie basin.
Between 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., the Polykrom’ Choir and the Mazel Combo brass band will stroll through the park. The latter returns for a small closing concert at 5 p.m.
