Comments by Marine Le Pen on the “honorary” title of head of the armed forces: “It’s serious”, says Jean-Yves Le Drian

Marine Le Pen’s words never cease to provoke reactions. In an interview with Télégramme, the RN candidate for the legislative elections considered that the role of head of the armed forces assumed by the President of the Republic was “honorary” in comparison to that of the Prime Minister. Way to see, perhaps, a future standoff between Emmanuel Macron and Jordan Bardella if the latter accesses Matignon after July 7.

Questioned by us, Jean-Yves Le Drian believes that Marine Le Pen “either sins through ignorance of the reality of the Constitution and the practice of the institutions of the Fifth Republic since 1958, or pretends to ignore it with the intention to contravene it. In both cases, it is serious. »

The president is responsible for military operations and, of course, nuclear deterrence.

Because for the former Minister of Defense of François Hollande – and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Emmanuel Macron – “the president, the military know well, is head of the armed forces, he chairs the defense councils, he fully exercises these responsibilities and he is the guarantor of national independence under Article 5 of the Constitution. Consequently; he is in particular responsible for military operations and obviously for nuclear deterrence.

The Breton therefore affirms it “with force: any lightness in the interpretation of these prerogatives calls into question what has constituted for more than 65 years one of the pillars of the Fifth Republic and the defense of France. »
