The federal government had suggested several times in recent months that it would be present for studies of the Gatineau tramway. It is now done, while the funding has been announced in partnership with Quebec. This is a significant amount that will be invested.
The federal and provincial governments will share the bill for the expenses related to the tramway studies. Funding of $163.5 million has been announced. Of this amount, nearly $100 million comes from Quebec and $65.4 million from Ottawa.
This funding will be used to carry out studies to assess environmental impacts, planning activities linked to the engineering of the preparatory works and the preliminary project. Remember that this tram project will be based in the West in the city with stations which should serve the districts of Hull and Aylmer.
This is a project that should also be established in Ontario, but for the moment no announcement has been made. Minister Lacombe recalled the importance of the Ontario government getting involved in the project.
The Government of Canada […] sees itself as the only possible partner who can finance the Ontario section and the crossing. And so, we accept this responsibility. It took a while. It is complicated.[…] The Government of Canada is not used to being the only party providing funding.
-Steven Mackinnon, Member of Parliament for Gatineau
According to preliminary studies, the tramway would have 30,000 users per day.
