Baku – Morocco remains at the top of the world ranking of countries leading the race towards carbon neutrality, by climbing to 8th position in the 2025 Climate Performance Index (CCPI), presented Wednesday during the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Morocco remains a leader in this ranking, where it is recognized as a leading regional player in sustainable development and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, according to CCPI experts.
In the report presenting the 2025 CCPI ranking, the same experts welcomed the priority given by Morocco to sustainable development, illustrated by its commitment to reaching 52% of renewable energies in the national energy mix by 2030 and by its progress significant in the development of solar and wind projects.
First on the African continent and in the Arab world in this ranking, dominated by Denmark (4th position – the first three places being vacant), Morocco, which gains one place compared to the 2024 edition, is ahead of several countries leaders in terms of decarbonization such as Germany (16th position), Norway (9th) and Sweden (11th).
The CCPI, which evaluates countries according to four criteria: greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, energy use and climate policy, is an independent tool that examines the performance of policies to combat climate change in 63 countries, including individual European Union member states as well as the EU as a whole (27 countries).
