Daigneault/Route 112 intersection: no agreement in sight

The City of Chambly has submitted a new study to the Ministry of Transport of Quebec (MTQ) in order to obtain a red light at the intersection of Route 112 and Rue Daigneault. This was not successful.

Will we soon see a red light at the corner of Route 112 and Rue Daigneault? Nothing is less sure. The City of Chambly and the MTQ met at the end of May on this subject. To reach an agreement, the municipality sent a traffic study carried out by an external company.

“The traffic study on adding a light at the intersection of rue Daigneault and boulevard De Périgny cost $10,000 taxes included,” specifies the City of Chambly. Although the result of this study shows that a light would be preferable and meets the criteria established by the ministry, the latter was unable to grant the City the new light. The ministry requires an additional traffic study on the repercussions of this new light on the other existing lights on Boulevard De Périgny, those on rue Bellerive and rue Laforce. »

Study to be specified

An analysis shared by the MTQ is now awaiting news from the municipality to continue the process. “The study must in particular evaluate the impacts adding this light on the traffic and safety of Route 112. It must take into account current and future flows, in anticipation of future developments. »

Among the upcoming developments, the MTQ obviously mentions the future development of the site of the former Chambly golf course, for which the second workshop of the cohort of 30 citizens took place last week. “A solution, which provides for the extension of Bourgogne Avenue, had been identified by the City in 2016 and had been accepted by the Ministry. The Ministry suggested that the City produce a comparative analysis between the solution of adding traffic lights and the concept accepted in 2016.”

The Ministry specifies which elements do not meet its request. “The development needs of the intersection must be identified (turning lanes in particular) as well as possible needs for acquisitions, relocation of public services, etc. Indeed, the proximity of other intersections can constitute significant constraints to the development of a new intersection with lights. »

New approach

After so many years of work, does the City of Chambly wish to continue its efforts? Several residents are calling for a red light at this intersection for safety reasons and to facilitate access to the city center and thus alleviate traffic on Martel Street. “In order to have a global vision of the axis of Boulevard De Périgny, the City prefers to set up a complete overall project than to only carry out one-off traffic studies which do not necessarily advance the project,” announces the Municipality . The City will therefore continue the process, but with a different approach. »
