After the GTI, the Jetta and the GLI, it’s the turn of the Volkswagen Golf R to proceed to the update stage. For the moment, we do not yet know all the final details of the Canadian version, but according to Volkswagen Canada, we can take the European model as a point of reference for the 2025 model of the R.
The approach is always the same at Volkswagen. The optical units are slightly redesigned, more incisive in this case. In Europe, IQ technology. Matrix LED light is available. In addition, the central light strip is more present, such as the integration of the illuminated VW logo. The bumper is more dynamic with its glossy black accents that contrast with the bodywork.
In profile, the rocker skirts are revised like the 18 or 19 inch rims. Consequently, the sprung mass is lower and improves handling and consumption. Even their design is designed to promote cooling of the brake discs. Towards the rear, the lights have a new internal structure while the 4 exhaust pipes are renewed. Volkswagen claims to have paid particular attention to the sound of the exhaust system and offers titanium tips with the Performance package.
Finally, a Black version will be introduced with, as its name suggests, an entirely black appearance. This version is confirmed for the United States, so there is a good chance that it will show up on the grille in Canada, but in a limited edition.
Finally an efficient system
In the cabin, Volkswagen continues to correct its terrible old-generation multimedia system with the integration of a new 12.9-inch screen. The entire system has been revised and is both more ergonomic and faster. Volkswagen is also reworking the presentation of the digital instrumentation broadcast from a 10.2-inch screen. For the rest, new, sportier seats are included, and certain steering wheel controls are repositioned.

Under the hood, it is no surprise that we find the 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. For 2025, horsepower jumps 13 horsepower to 328, and torque hits 310 pound-feet. Since the removal of the manual gearbox at the end of 2024, all that’s left is the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG) to get your hands on. Volkswagen maintains the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system which allows you to reach 0 to 100 kilometers/hour in 4.6 seconds.
The first Canadian deliveries of the 2025 Golf R are not expected until next winter. We have the right to expect an increase in prices, but their extent is not known.
