IF, the illustration festival renewed for a second edition

After a triumphant first edition, the Illustration Festival (IF) event returns for a second edition. From September 27 to 29, the festival takes over the entire spaces of Subsistances and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Lyon (ENSBA). 50 artists will be present with exhibitions, conferences, workshops and other fun activities.

To celebrate their 20th anniversary, Kiblind magazine has decided to launch its illustration festival in October 2023. Two days of free festivities, 80 French and international illustrators, exhibitions at the heart of Subsistances and ENSBA Lyon. An occasion “to offer the magazine in full size”, explains Jean Tourette, co-founder and associate director of Kiblind. A successful bet and surpassed with 9,000 visitors. So how can we do better?

New identity

For this second edition, the Kiblind team “will try to do as well and a little better if possible”, promises Jean Tourette. Instead of two days of festivities, IF is extended with an extra evening, on Friday evening. The festival will also take over new spaces at the Subs and the École des Beaux-Arts. The opportunity to better occupy space and accommodate more people.

Who says new edition, says new identity with a brand new logo. “We have a reputation for creativity to uphold”, quips the associate director of Kiblind. For the second year in a row, the IF logo is protean and lively and is accompanied by a new musical universe.

Five new artists are in the spotlight at this second festival: Frenchman Jérémie Moreau, Liam Cobb (Iceland), Saitemiss (Taiwan), Benedikt Luft (Germany) and Lauren Martin (United States). Added to this poster, 45 other illustrators to give “a global spectrum of everything that happens in the illustration”.

We take the same and start again

Most of the activities of the 2023 edition will be back for this year, such as the live exhibition where artists will have to draw, on a white cube, a work in their image to then be exhibited throughout the weekend. Five thematic exhibitions (fashion/nature/grocery/literature/city) will be accompanied by conferences, prepared by the artists themselves. The “Pimp my body” stand will be back to allow interaction with festival-goers and illustrate parts of their body. Masterclasses, a tattoo stand, workshops, an object market and animated short films will be on offer.

Different cubes exhibited during the first edition

Saturday evening will mark the return of cartoon fighting. Don’t be afraid, the only authorized weapon: the tablet. Artists compete by drawing and the public participates by electing the winner. These fights will be followed by augmented concerts where music and illustration will mix to form a dialogue.
